Reimagining Philanthropy Through Data: Spotlight on the Philanthropy Data Commons
Since 2022, JH Philanthropy has proudly supported the development of the Philanthropy Data Commons (PDC) - a bold, sector-wide initiative to transform how data flows across the philanthropic ecosystem. Seeded by the MacArthur Foundation, and built in collaboration with funders, changemakers, and data platform providers, the PDC is creating shared infrastructure to make funding more transparent, equitable, and effective.
To demonstrate the power of the PDC infrastructure, we have built an initial application - Exchange, powered by the PDC. Exchange is designed to solve one of philanthropy’s biggest challenges: the disconnect between those seeking funding and those looking to give it.
Exchange offers a solution to bridge this gap through:
🔹 Early-stage grant proposal data-sharing capabilities
🔹 A structured way for funders and changemakers to find each other and engage in transparent, intentional interactions
🔹 Searchable, standardized data to reduce duplication and support better decision-making
We are currently piloting Exchange Alpha—a minimum viable product that lays the groundwork for deeper collaboration across the sector. And this is where you come in.
Over the next few months, we are inviting values-aligned organizations to test Exchange, provide feedback, and help shape its evolution. Whether you're part of a funder collaborative, a philanthropy-serving organization, or a community-based nonprofit, we’d love for you to explore what the PDC is building and how you might get involved.
If you’ve been waiting for a way to help make philanthropy more connected and community-centered, now’s the time. Reach out to the PDC team to learn more.
